What it is

Laser hair removal is not one machine, one setting.

Most clinics use a single laser platform and a single set of settings. That works fine if you have light skin and dark hair. If you have darker skin, the wrong laser can burn you, scar you, or cause hyperpigmentation — and many clinics refuse to treat melanin-rich skin at all rather than invest in the right equipment.

We use two laser platforms. Diode (810nm) for lighter skin types, where it's faster and more efficient. Nd:YAG (1064nm) for darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV–VI), where the longer wavelength bypasses melanin in the skin and targets the follicle without surface damage. The right platform for your skin, every session.

Results require a series. Hair grows in cycles, and only follicles in the active growth phase respond to laser. That's why six to eight sessions is the standard — over time, all of your follicles cycle through and get treated. Anyone promising permanent results in one or two sessions is selling, not treating.

Your visit

What a session actually looks like.

Five steps. Most of your time is in the chair; the laser itself is fast.

— 01

Skin assessment

First visit includes a Fitzpatrick skin-type assessment to select the right laser and calibrate settings. We test-spot before treating.

~10 min
— 02

Prep & shave

Treatment area should be shaved 12–24 hours before. Hair above the skin absorbs energy that should be reaching the follicle.

Patient-side
— 03

Cooling & laser

Built-in skin cooling makes the laser surprisingly tolerable. Most patients describe sensation as a warm snap. We work in passes across the area.

5–60 min
— 04

Post-care protocol

Aloe and SPF. No direct sun exposure for 48 hours. No hot showers, saunas, or exercise for 24 hours. Normal activity otherwise resumes immediately.

Pricing

Package pricing. Not per-session traps.

Laser hair removal requires a series. Per-session pricing exists to extract more money from patients before they finish — we don't do it. Packages cover the full course.

Package pricing (6 sessions)
$450–$2,400
Six-session package · By treatment area
Most popular: Brazilian + underarms package
~$1,500 for both areas, 6 sessions each. Maintenance sessions after the initial series run $75–$200 each as needed.
Upper lip (6 sessions)$450
Underarms (6 sessions)$750
Bikini (6 sessions)$900
Brazilian (6 sessions)$1,200
Full legs (6 sessions)$2,100
Full back (6 sessions)$2,400
Maintenance sessions$75–$200 each
What about "unlimited" packages? Some clinics advertise unlimited sessions for a flat fee. The math only works for them if most patients finish in 6–8 sessions like everyone else. The marketing is the only difference. We price by package because it aligns our incentives with finishing your treatment, not extending it.
Is it right for you?

Laser hair removal isn't for everyone.

Hair color matters more than people realize.

A good fit

You're a great candidate if…

  • You have dark hair on the treatment area — laser targets melanin
  • Your skin tone is anywhere on the Fitzpatrick scale (we have the right laser for all)
  • You're committed to 6–8 sessions, spaced 4–8 weeks apart
  • You can avoid sun exposure between sessions
  • You're not pregnant or breastfeeding
× Not a fit

Laser won't work if…

  • You have white, gray, blonde, or red hair — there's no melanin for the laser to target
  • You have active skin infection or open lesions in the treatment area
  • You're using certain photosensitizing medications (Accutane within 6 months, some antibiotics)
  • You have very tan skin from recent sun exposure — we'll reschedule until your skin returns to baseline
  • You're pregnant

"I have very dark skin and got turned away from three places before this. Bronx Med Spa actually has the right laser for my skin type, and the technician explained why. Six sessions in, no burns, no hyperpigmentation, no more shaving."

Questions

Laser, answered straight.

Common questions, especially around safety for darker skin and realistic timelines.

Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin? +
Yes, when the right laser is used. Our Nd:YAG platform (1064nm) is specifically suited for Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI. The longer wavelength bypasses melanin in the skin and targets the follicle without surface damage. Clinics that only have diode or IPL machines should not be treating darker skin — that's where burns and hyperpigmentation happen.
How many sessions do I need? +
Six to eight is the standard, spaced 4–8 weeks apart depending on the body area. Face is faster (4 weeks); body is slower (6–8 weeks). After the initial series, most patients return every 6–12 months for maintenance sessions as needed.
Does it hurt? +
Modern lasers include built-in skin cooling that dramatically reduces discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as a warm rubber-band snap. The most sensitive areas are the bikini line and upper lip; underarms and legs are typically much more comfortable.
Is laser hair removal permanent? +
The FDA term is "permanent hair reduction," not removal. After a full series, most patients see 70–90% reduction in hair density and significantly finer, lighter regrowth. Some maintenance is typically needed every 6–12 months. Hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause) can stimulate new follicle activity.
How much does laser hair removal cost in the Bronx? +
Our package pricing ranges from $450 for upper lip (6 sessions) to $2,400 for full back (6 sessions). Most patients spend $1,000–$2,000 total for their full course depending on areas treated. We provide a written quote at consultation.
Can I shave between sessions? +
Yes — and you should. Shaving doesn't affect the laser at all. What you cannot do is wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams, because those remove the hair from the follicle that the laser needs to target.
What about sun exposure? +
Critical. Avoid direct sun on treatment areas for at least 4 weeks before each session, and use SPF 30+ between sessions. Tanned skin (recent sun, tanning beds, or self-tanner) significantly increases the risk of burns and hyperpigmentation. We'll reschedule if your skin isn't at baseline.
