What it is

Not all peels are the same peel.

"Chemical peel" is a category, not a treatment. Different acids work on different skin problems at different depths. Glycolic acid for surface brightening and texture. Salicylic acid for oily, acne-prone skin and clogged pores. Lactic acid for sensitive or dehydrated skin needing gentle exfoliation. TCA (trichloroacetic acid) for deeper concerns like hyperpigmentation, melasma, sun damage, and texture.

The clinics that just offer "a peel" without specifying which one and why are essentially selling whatever they have on hand. The right approach is to match peel chemistry to your skin's actual concern, then dose appropriately for your skin type and tolerance.

Peels also vary in depth and recovery. Light peels have no downtime and need to be done in series. Medium-depth peels (TCA) produce dramatic results in one session but require 5–7 days of visible peeling. We help you choose based on what you can tolerate and what you're trying to address.

Your visit

How a peel visit goes.

Four steps. The peel application itself is fast; preparation and post-care matter more than people realize.

— 01

Skin assessment

First visit includes skin assessment to match peel type and strength to your skin. We may recommend a lighter peel first to test tolerance, especially for darker skin types where post-inflammatory pigmentation risk is real.

~10 min
— 02

Prep & cleanse

Thorough cleanse and prep solution to remove oils that would interfere with peel penetration. Eye protection applied.

~5 min
— 03

Peel application

Acid applied in layers, monitored for the right level of frosting or color change, then neutralized when appropriate. You'll feel tingling or warmth — moderate for light peels, more pronounced for TCA.

~10 min
— 04

Recovery protocol

Detailed post-care: avoid sun, use specific products, no exfoliants, no makeup for 24 hours (light peels) or up to 7 days (TCA). We provide written instructions and a take-home kit.

Recovery: 1–7 days
Pricing

By peel type. And depth.

Light peels are best done as a series. Medium-depth peels (TCA) are single-session treatments. We provide quotes at consultation based on your skin and goal.

A note on depth and risk. Deeper peels produce more dramatic results but carry higher risk — especially for darker skin types, where post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can persist for months. We start conservative, test tolerance, and only escalate to TCA when we're confident it's the right call. Any clinic offering deep peels without an assessment first is taking risks that aren't theirs to take.
Is it right for you?

Peels aren't universal.

Best candidates see real results. Wrong candidates can have setbacks.

A good fit

You're a strong candidate if…

  • You have hyperpigmentation, melasma, or sun damage
  • You have congestive or oily, acne-prone skin (salicylic)
  • You have post-acne marks you want to fade
  • You can stay out of the sun during recovery and after
  • You're willing to commit to a series for light peels
  • For TCA: you can tolerate 5–7 days of visible peeling
× Not a fit

Peels are not for you if…

  • You have active acne breakouts or open lesions
  • You're on Accutane currently or within 6 months
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding (some peel acids)
  • You have very sensitive skin or active rosacea
  • You can't avoid sun exposure or skip exfoliants during recovery
  • You've had a recent laser treatment or microneedling within 2 weeks
  • Darker skin types should start with the lightest appropriate option and may not be candidates for some deeper peels
★★★★★

"I'd had melasma for years and everything I tried made it worse or did nothing. Bronx Med Spa designed a multi-month peel protocol specifically for melasma in darker skin. Six months in, my pigmentation is 80% better. The patience paid off."

Questions

Peels, matched to skin.

Common questions, especially around peel selection, recovery, and safety for darker skin.

How much do chemical peels cost in the Bronx? +
Our light peels (glycolic, salicylic, lactic) start at $150 per session. A series of three is typically $405 (10% series discount). Medium-depth TCA peels are $400–$450 per session. Specialized protocols (like melasma) are quoted at consultation.
Are chemical peels safe for darker skin? +
Some are, with the right precautions. Lighter peels (glycolic, lactic, salicylic) are generally safer for darker skin types. TCA peels carry higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in melanin-rich skin and require careful protocol selection. We start conservative, test tolerance, and recommend specific products for pre- and post-peel care. Some clinics refuse to peel darker skin at all — we don't, but we adjust the approach.
How much downtime should I expect? +
Light peels (glycolic, salicylic, lactic): 1–3 days of mild redness and possibly fine flaking. Most patients return to normal activity the next day. TCA peels: 5–7 days of visible peeling that looks worse than it is. Plan around your social calendar.
Which peel do I need? +
Depends entirely on your concern. Glycolic for surface brightening and texture. Salicylic for oily, acne-prone skin. Lactic for sensitive or dehydrated skin. TCA for hyperpigmentation, melasma, sun damage. We do an assessment at consultation and recommend based on your skin and goals — and we're not trying to upsell you to the deepest peel.
Can I do a peel before an event? +
Light peels: yes, with at least 7–10 days buffer to allow any redness or flaking to fully resolve. TCA peels: absolutely not within 3 weeks of a major event — the peeling phase is visible. Plan accordingly.
Will peels make my hyperpigmentation worse? +
Done incorrectly, yes — particularly in darker skin. Done correctly, peels are one of the most effective treatments for hyperpigmentation. The key is matching peel depth and chemistry to your skin type, using pre-treatment products to prep the skin, and aggressive sun protection during recovery.
Can I combine peels with other treatments? +
With careful spacing, yes. Botox and filler: typically fine the same week, though some providers prefer separation. Microneedling and laser: at least 2 weeks before or after a peel. HydraFacial: at least 1 week separation. We sequence based on your overall treatment plan.
How often can I get peels? +
Light peels: every 4 weeks during a series. TCA peels: typically once every 3–6 months. Over-peeling damages the skin barrier and can cause long-term issues — we'll tell you when to stop.
